AI Companion safety
The AI Companion is there to reflect with you. This is what it does when a conversation turns to crisis.

An AI, not a human
The AI Companion in the Minsence app is a computer program. It is not a human, it cannot feel emotions, and it is not a therapist. The App says so at the start of every conversation, and a short note "You are talking with an AI, not a human" stays visible above the message field for the whole conversation. The App is only for adults; AI companions may not be suitable for minors.
When someone may be in crisis
- Detection. Every message to the Companion is checked on our server for language about suicide, self-harm or wanting to die, in English and German. The check does not depend on the AI model, and when in doubt it shows help.
- What you see. When a message matches, the App shows a card above the conversation that stays there: "It sounds like you may be going through something very hard. You do not have to face it alone. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time. In an emergency, call 911." with buttons to call or text 988.
- Always an answer. Even when the daily limit is reached, the AI is unavailable or its answer was blocked, a message in crisis gets a reply with these crisis lines.
- The AI itself is instructed to respond with care, not to give medical advice, and to point to 988 and emergency services.
- Always reachable. Crisis help with 988 is one tap away in the Companion and in Settings, and under every answer the App cannot give.
What we keep
Conversations are not stored on our servers. When crisis help is shown, we only count it, per month, without the message and without who wrote it. We use these numbers for the yearly report that California law asks of us.
Reporting answers
You can report any Companion reply in the App with the flag next to it. A person reviews every report, and we use them to make the Companion safer. You can also write to support@minsence.com.
